Jeder bisher synthetisierte oder in der Literatur beschriebene Stoff erhält eine '''CAS-Nummer'''. Diese Nummern bestehen aus 3 Blöcken, z. B. 101-68-8, wobei der linke Block zwei- oder mehrstellig, der mittlere Block immer zweistellig und der rechte Block 1-stellig (Prüfziffer) ist.
