ECOS is a consortium of Environmental NGOs created to enhance the voice of environmental protection in the standardisation processes.
ECOS’ vision is a clean and healthy environment where people live in respect of the planet and its natural resources, preserving them for future generations.

ECOS aims at increasing the ecological performance of products, ensuring sound measurement methods for pollutants, greening management systems in businesses and improving consumer information towards sustainable consumption.
Our mission is to influence the development of ambitious strategies to reduce and control sources of environmental pollution, and to promote resource and energy efficiency, environmental health and sustainable development.

ECOS is mainly involved in monitoring the activities of the international standardisation bodies (CEN, CENELEC, ISO, IEC) and product policies at EU level (such as the Directive on the 'Ecodesign of Energy-Using Products').
To this end, ECOS defends the environmental interests in the standards development process at European and international level. In particular, we contribute to the evaluation of standardisation needs and the standards’ development or revision process through providing legal and technical expertise. ECOS particularly focuses on standards developed to support European environmental legislation and policies.

With the support of over 40 environmental NGOs across Europe as members, ECOS is the only environmental organisation worldwide specialised in standardisation and technical product policies.

ECOS is a Partner Organisation the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) and of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC), and a member of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). ECOS is also a liaison organisation to several technical committees of the international standardisation organisations, ISO and IEC.

ECOS is involved in over 60 technical committees within these organisations and participates, mainly through experts, in the standards development work.

In the EU, ECOS has been officially recognised as part of the four stakeholders’ organisations whose representation and participation in the European Standardisation System shall be supported by the European Union and the standadisation organisations (see Regulation (EU) 1025/2012). This contributes to ensure that the interests of societal stakeholders and SMEs are represented at European level thereby compensating the absence of a systematic and organised participation of those stakeholders in standardisation at national level.

ECOS is a leading organisation of the Coolproducts Campaign aimed to ensure the promotion and defence of the environmental interests in EU environmental regulations for energy-related products (Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Policies). For more information, please visit the Coolproducts campaign website.

The ECOS legal statutes are available in French and in English.

ECOS receives funding from the European Union, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and several public and private donors.

ECOS is a membership organisation, open to NGOs active on a European or a national level. It was established in 2002 as a non-profit association under the Belgian law. It is funded by membership fees, the European Commission, the European Climate Foundation, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the German Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Environment Agency. European Environmental Citizens Organisation for Standardisation

Who we are

ECOS’ vision is a clean and healthy environment where people live in respect of the planet and its natural resources, preserving them for future generations.

Our mission is to influence the development of ambitious strategies to reduce and control sources of environmental pollution, and to promote resource and energy efficiency, environmental health and sustainable development.
